A reaction to the swine flue and Foot and Mouth disease in the 20th century, proposing an alternative production method to cater for the demands or pork consumption. The proposal adapts a set of strict rules towards organic farming while integrating pig farms into different archetype within the city.
The idea of specifying the amount of pigs according to the demand of consumption is quite relevant with my intention in trying to integrate elephant in my pachyeocentric world where the number of elephant is dependent on the land available for the dietary needs of elephants. The project remains at a humanistic approach in dealing with animal consumption but what I find interesting is the integration between animal farms and urban programs merging two architectural programs that would not usually exist in close proximity.
In the pig city, numbers of pigs are sustained and regulations. The 65 pig farms within the city adapts to different building typology from high-rises to bridges. However each farm follows the same sets of program creating a system that allows for variation in the placement and quantity of pigs it provides. I think this can be elaborated as a way of reacting to different cities with different urban conditions. Within my Pachyeocentric world, similar scale of integration could happen between building and the habitat of the elephant.
With the modernization of cities, issues such as over population and urbanization will drive more and more lands to be shared between animals and human. The human-centric attitude of commodifying animal has proven to be an un-sustainable way of co-habiting with animals as shown by the current extinction rate.
The Pachyeocentric landscape would be a scanturary for elephant in the city, but it is also a simulation that educates human to become more bio-centric through different experience. The augmented experience can be a way to prepare our attitude in valuing and co-habiting with nature as we continue to impose destruction on natural habitats. Alternatively it is also a reflection of the consequence of our current value system and lack of conservation towards nature, allowing the user to re-think their current attitudes.
