Went to Tate Britain yesterday for Rachael Whiteread. It’s a rare opportunity to experience 3 decades of Whiteread’s sculptures. Her castings varies from intimate to monumental but are always human scale. For those who haven’t heard of her before, she is known for casting the space inside or around everyday structures – such as floors, staircases or entire rooms and houses – recording their surfaces and allowing their shape to determine the form of her sculpture. In this way she explores the human imprint on our everyday environment and essentially, the ghost of the past.
