2017-18: World Building

Diploma 12 is interested in instrumenting change through the strategic implementation of architectural practice. Using the design of strategically deployed events as a catalyst, we will build worlds of our own that are carefully crafted for future communities, creating visionary architectural models that reflect their precise ideals and dreams.

W.I.P – Mariana Trench and Collective Memory

The Mariana trench in many ways explains some of the main themes in my project. Not only is it an dynamic habitat for our collective memory, but it simultaneously dismantles the authority set by its landlocked equivalent – the museum.

The museum as an institution of preservation (one of many) is responsible for crafting a narrative for our collective history and memory, however it fails. It is static and singular – freezing an object in time, and with it, its ability to story-tell through time.

The Mariana Trench as an alternative typology of preservation, dismantles the singular voice of the museum, and also undermines the hierarchy of its material | object based culture. Instead, it assembles a narrative(s) of our collective history with an entirely new set of ambiguous values (dependent on natural forces, materiality, aging, etc).

However, this new form of representation and organization (not based on the given cultural value) provides an alternative, and plural form of interpretation and narration.
